WHA Blog

Reproductive health information, explained clearly

Questions about your health don’t always come up during an appointment. They show up later—when something feels off, when you’re weighing a decision or when you just want to understand what’s normal.

The WHA blog is here for that in-between space. You’ll find articles written and reviewed by our clinicians, covering gynecology, pregnancy and overall health. The goal is simple: give you information that’s accurate, understandable and actually useful.

While helpful, these articles are not a substitute for medical care from a licensed professional. Read our medical disclaimer and website terms of use.

Is it safe to use birth control to stop periods? One of the most common questions we hear from patients is whether or not it is safe to not have periods. Most people are so accustomed to having their menstrual cycle that the idea of not having a monthly period feels strange and unnatural. However,…

The Truth Behind Five Common Birth Control Myths

“Oh, I would NEVER drive a Honda. My friend’s sister drove a Honda, and the brakes didn’t work well, and she rear-ended a car on the freeway.” “I would NEVER drink coffee. My mom drank coffee, and she had a reaction and got really wired and couldn’t sleep.” These may sound like ridiculous generalizations, but…

More Common Than You Think: Sexually Transmitted Infections, HPV, and More!

There are few topics as taboo as sex. By extension, infections passed through sex (and yes, other non-sexual acts) often carry stigma. It’s even deeply embedded in the verbiage we use. I often hear patients say they are “clean” after negative sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. This suggests having an STI makes you “dirty.” I…

Gina R. Allison, MD Sep 8, 2020

Let’s talk about painful sex.

In our culture, women’s sexuality isn’t often talked about honestly or openly. We’re either keeping it totally private or glorifying the experience to a point that is unrealistic. So as women, we either feel the pressure to keep mum or to boast about our exciting and perfect sex lives. And if something doesn’t feel right,…

Vaccine Prevents HPV and Cervical Cancer

Since the HPV vaccine hit the market in 2006, I’ve noticed a lot of young women are hesitant to get it. The common questions I hear are: “What is HPV?” “What is my actual risk of getting cervical cancer?” and “Is the vaccine safe?” I also counsel mothers who are debating whether to give the…

What is Menopause?

As my patients get into their 40s and start noticing changes in their menstrual cycles, they often start thinking about menopause. Their older sisters, coworkers and friends may be lamenting hot flashes and night sweats.
