Lubricant is your friend: navigating vaginal dryness and sex

This post was written by former WHA nurse practitioner Jacqui Quetal. Although Jacqui is no longer with WHA, we still love this advice! Hopefully your experiences have helped you realize that sex can be a fun and important part of a healthy relationship. But when sex becomes uncomfortable, unfortunately I find that my patients tend…

Jody M. Lindwall, CNM, MSN Jun 27, 2014

Should I have my baby circumcised?

One of the major responsibilities of parents is to make decisions on behalf of your children. You decide what food you will offer them, what vaccines to give them and when, what movies they should/should not see and even whether they can go over to their friend’s house for the afternoon. Indeed, the list of…

What if I go past my due date?

Pregnancy is full of anticipation, and it seems to start from the very beginning. Many patients are able to figure out their due dates immediately after their home pregnancy tests turn positive. We doctors and midwives count the days and weeks right along with you, so we can deliver the right care at the right…

Gary A. Burgoine, MD Feb 21, 2013

If I'm on the pill, will I ever be able to get pregnant?

Let’s bust a birth control myth. A common question WHA providers hear is whether long-term use of hormonal contraceptives—like the birth control pill—affects future fertility. In other words: Can I still get pregnant after using the pill for a long time? This is a reasonable concern. Many people spend much of their reproductive years trying…

Can I Get My Hair Colored When I’m Pregnant? And Other Common Questions

Other questions pop up along the way. Polling family and friends and searching the internet can lead to a variety of inconsistent answers….

It’s important to take extra care to avoid exposure to viruses, but it’s often hard to avoid. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about two- thirds of women in the U.S….

Jaime E. Kean, MD Jan 10, 2013

Can labor induction increase the chance of C-section?

Labor induction is the medical term for stimulating the onset of labor. A “successful” induction is considered to be one that leads to vaginal delivery. A common question we hear from pregnant patients is whether labor induction will increase the chance of having a Cesarean section delivery (C-section). The short answer? It depends. The relationship…

Managing the Symptoms of Menopause

In my recent post, “What is Menopause,” I talked about the symptoms that women may experience in the months and years preceding and following the cessation of periods. Fluctuation in energy levels, agitation, hot flashes, night sweats, difficulty concentrating and headaches are all possible as a result of changing hormone levels. These symptoms can be…

Prenatal Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an important tool to help patients and doctors navigate through pregnancy. The clinical use of ultrasound in pregnancy began in the 1970s. Initially, its usefulness was limited. However, the technology rapidly improved and now it is difficult to imagine not having this remarkable window into a developing pregnancy. Not only is ultrasound an…
