WHA Blog

Reproductive health information, explained clearly

Questions about your health don’t always come up during an appointment. They show up later—when something feels off, when you’re weighing a decision or when you just want to understand what’s normal.

The WHA blog is here for that in-between space. You’ll find articles written and reviewed by our clinicians, covering gynecology, pregnancy and overall health. The goal is simple: give you information that’s accurate, understandable and actually useful.

While helpful, these articles are not a substitute for medical care from a licensed professional. Read our medical disclaimer and website terms of use.

These questions are valid, personal and something each person should feel comfortable discussing with their provider in the context of their specific situation. For most people, the evidence is clear: the benefits of…

It's a Good Time to Get Your Flu Vaccine

Every flu season, people question whether getting the flu vaccine is truly necessary, or even safe. It’s common to think the vaccine causes side effects or the flu itself (it doesn’t!). Or assume repeated vaccination doesn’t do all that much. Some lucky few may think they’ve never had the flu before, so the vaccine isn’t…

Evidence-based nutritional guidelines: how to choose quality carbs

In our series on evidence-based nutritional guidelines, we’ve explored eating plenty of plants and limiting the intake of certain fats. The third and final post takes a closer look at carbohydrates. For many years, fad diets have excluded carbs, wrongfully naming them a culprit in poor nutrition. In reality, it’s about the quality of the…

Reid Bondurant, CNM, MSN Mar 15, 2023

My approach to gender-affirming wellness care

Gender-affirming wellness care supports and affirms a person’s gender identity holistically across a range of physical, emotional, behavioral and social dimensions. That care could look like routine gynecological care and screening, or contraceptive management. It could also look like hormone therapy or surgical intervention. My goal as a provider is to listen, learn and gather…

Midwives, Your Lifetime Partners in Care

Midwives are most often known as healthcare providers who work with people during pregnancy and childbirth. As a midwife, I can say that most of us love this aspect of the work. Bodily Health Comes in Every Shape and Size

Weight is only a number. And yet, our culture has conditioned us—women especially—to believe that weight is the ultimate marker of wellness and, too often, value. But thanks to dedicated studies, science-based research and movements like Health at Every Size® (HAES®), we know that weight does not reflect a person’s health; that “healthy” isn’t a…

Let’s talk about painful sex.
Gina R. Allison, MD Sep 8, 2020

Let’s talk about painful sex.

In our culture, women’s sexuality isn’t often talked about honestly or openly. We’re either keeping it totally private or glorifying the experience to a point that is unrealistic. So as women, we either feel the pressure to keep mum or to boast about our exciting and perfect sex lives. And if something doesn’t feel right,…
